As an athlete whose career exemplifies long-term growth, and a coach who has seen that process unfold for scores athletes under his care, Brian Finnel walks the walk, talks the talk, and helps others do the same on their running journeys.
Brian competed collegiately at UW-Stevens Point, focusing on cross country and the 5k & 10k. After graduating, he joined the Wisconsin Runner Racing Team, where his consistency in training & growth as an athlete led him to a marathon PB of 2:22:19. He has also been the top Wisconsin finisher in multiple Boston Marathons.
As a high school coach, Brian’s teams and athletes have excelled on the track & cross country course. In the last 11 years, the Middleton Cardinals have ascended to one of the top programs in the state, including a pair of boy’s State XC Championships and two teams who qualified for the Nike XC National Championships. Coach Finnel has also been a clinic presenter and speaker at coaches’ seminars throughout the state and Midwest.
Brian’s coaching philosophy centers on care and connection to foster growth. “As a coach, my priority is helping athletes succeed and reach their goals. I believe in effective communication and creating personalized training plans that accommodate each individual's life schedule. Whether you're aiming for your first 5k or striving for a Boston Marathon qualification, I'm here to support you every step of the way.” This process includes individualized & flexible training plans, as well as support navigating race strategy and mental preparation & execution.
In addition to coaching, Brian is a middle school science teacher, superhero movie enthusiast, and Packers & Badger basketball fan. He lives in Cross Plains with his wife, Bridget, their three children, and their golden doodle, Nina.
